Champagne La Villesenière - PN 170

Champagne La Villesenière - PN 170

On the winding left bank of the Marne, in the tranquil village of Boursault, the Michez family has been crafting champagnes that express the soul of their terroir since 1973. Under the La Villesenière label, Laurence and Cyrille Michez are now producing a new generation of wines—deeply rooted in tradition, yet with a contemporary vision of purity and precision. Their philosophy is simple: minimal intervention, maximum listening. The vineyard tells the story; the winemaker simply writes it down.

PN 170 2021 represents a special chapter in that story. This champagne is made entirely from 100% Pinot Noir grapes sourced from old vines (55 years old on average) on the chalky, clay, and sandy soils of Boursault. Slow maturation on the northern slopes creates subtle acidity and natural tension. The wine was vinified and aged entirely in oak, using only the first press juice (Cuvée A). Malolactic fermentation was carried out to bring softness, while gentle filtration was used solely to ensure clarity. With a dosage of just 1 g/L, PN 170 2021 expresses itself in its purest form: powerful, linear, and rooted in its chalky origins. Only 1,299 bottles were produced.

  • Productieproces

The hand-harvested Pinot Noir grapes undergo rigorous selection in the vineyard. Only the first pressing (tête de cuvée) is used to preserve maximum finesse. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, where the wine also ages on fine lees. Malolactic fermentation is complete, resulting in a harmonious balance between energy and smoothness. No stainless steel is used in this process. After light filtration, the wine is bottled with a minimum dosage of 1 g/L, to fully express the pure identity of Pinot Noir and the Boursault terroir.

What is a Millésime or Vintage Champagne?

A Millésime (or Vintage Champagne) is made from grapes from just one exceptional harvest year and is aged in the bottle for at least three years. This type of Champagne perfectly reflects the climatic conditions of that particular year and often has a more complex and layered character than a non-vintage Champagne.

What is Extra Brut Champagne?

Extra Brut Champagne contains even less sugar than Brut, between 0 and 6 grams per liter. This results in an extra-dry style with pure, pronounced flavors. Extra Brut is popular with connoisseurs who appreciate a clean, mineral champagne with plenty of freshness.

What dynamics does wood give to Champagne?

When Champagne is aged in oak barrels, it adds extra structure, roundness, and complexity. The oak provides subtle oxidation, making the Champagne richer and fuller, with aromas of vanilla, toast, honey, and spices. This is often used in Champagnes with long aging and deep flavors.
