About calories in Champagne
â–² Number of grams of sugar per glass.
A while ago, we discussed dosage in Champagne, which simply expresses the number of grams of sugar per liter. Since then, we've received a few questions about how many calories Champagne actually contains. We've looked into it for you.
Calories in drinks
The alcohol is the primary source of calories in drinks. Each standard drink contains roughly the same amount of alcohol, because the higher the alcohol percentage, the smaller the drink. So what makes one drink contain more calories than another?
Sugars, mainly. Sweet wine, for example, contains more calories than dry wine. A mixed drink, of course, contains a lot of sugar, due to the addition of soda or fruit juice, for example.
Also not entirely unimportant is fat . Think of creamy liqueurs. Fancy cocktails? These calorie bombs often contain multiple (also fatty) alcoholic beverages as well as fruit juices, syrups, and soft drinks. So, lots of alcohol, sugars, and fats.
Calories in Champagne
Champagne is primarily made up of water, followed by alcohol, sugars, and a small amount of protein. The calculation below assumes a 100-milliliter glass.
Calories from sugarRoughly speaking, 1 gram of sugar provides about 4 calories. If we assume a Brut Champagne has a dosage of 12 grams per liter, a 100-milliliter glass provides about 5 calories from sugar . The calories from alcohol are added to this.
Calories from alcoholAn average champagne glass usually contains 12 milliliters of alcohol. That's about 10 grams of alcohol. 1 gram of alcohol contains 7 calories. This means a glass contains about 70 calories from alcohol .
All told, a 100-milliliter glass of Brut Champagne contains approximately 75 calories . A Brut Nature would provide a maximum of 72 kcal, and a Doux a minimum of 90 kcal.
